Stainless Steel Cookware

Advantages of Buying Stainless Steel Cookware

Stainless steel cookware comes in many different manufacturing varieties, designs and levels of quality. This means that whatever the budget or need for cookware, it is very likely a stainless steel set will be in the lineup.

So, what makes stainless steel a good buy? There are several reasons, but it all boils down to three things: range of cost, durability and variety.

Range Of Cost

You can find a conservative stainless steel cookware set that includes all of the basics that you need in the kitchen for around $80. For that price and with the proper care, that investment can last for years. This is a great option for starter apartments or gifts for college-aged children living with roommates who don’t know how to care for cookware.

Or, if you are a professional or at-home chef with visions of culinary greatness, you may choose to invest in a stainless-steel clad cookware set with a copper core that can cost as much as $2000. You could probably pay even more for added bells and whistles, but $2000 worth of cookware will provide even the most ambitious chef with ample cooking power.

These examples describe the extremes of your stainless steel options. It is more likely you will find something in between that is perfect for your kitchen needs, and that is the advantage – stainless steel is quality that can match any budget.

Durability

Stainless steel is very strong. It is rust-proof and stain resistant (if you remember not to rest or store acidic foods in it for long periods of time), and it is not easily scratched up by metal utensils.

This type of cookware is also easy to clean and needs no real special treatment. As with any high-quality kitchen item, it should be hand washed, but is not strictly necessary. So, if you’re in a pinch and need to throw a pan in the dishwasher it’s not going to get ruined in there.

And, all of this is delivered without being too heavy. It’s not super light like titanium, but it is a lot lighter than cast iron. This balanced with strength makes for a good all-around cookware package.

Variety

Stainless steel is not the best heat conductor, so it is usually combined with other metals in various ways to increase conductivity.

Some stainless steel utensils have a copper or aluminum bottom which allows heat to evenly rise up into the pot or pan. More expensive designs are clad – manufactured by cladding (covering) an aluminum or copper core with stainless steel. This allows the more conductive interior metal to bring the heat from the stove up the sides of the pot or pan, more evenly distributing heat.

Stainless steel has non-stick properties, but cookware sets can also be found with a non-stick polymer applied. The benefits and drawbacks between this style and “unfinished stainless steel are up for debate. The advantage is that the quality of stainless steel can be combined with this feature, giving it even more product versatility.

If you decide stainless steel is the right cookware material for you, you can rest assured that you have several choices among high-quality sets.
