Tips About Eating Healthy Foods

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

New Years Day often sees the beginning of many diets. These diets never last long and some find that they say they will then wait until next year to start up again after failing. That is a common mistake dieters made. Don’t make your diet your New Years resolution. Instead, think about eating healthy foods whether you are on or off a diet.

That way you can do your best even when you are not feeling your strongest. Some think that eating healthy meals is hard, but it is only as hard as you make it. Good food takes more prep time, but it is certainly worth that time for the sake of your health.

Are Organic Foods worth the Extra Cash you need to Fork Over?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

The truth can be so unintuitive sometimes. There has been a British research study done that has found that all the health benefits claimed for organic foods are really not that “natural”. They aren’t any better for you than what you get on the “regular” side of the store, nutrient-wise. It wasn’t actually a study all its own that found this, so much as a compendium of all the studies done on organic foods over the past half-century. It happens sometimes - we have all the materials we need to see something, but we need it all organized for us before we the point of it all. The damning thing they’ve found is this - in most ways, organic foods are no better for our diets than factory-farmed foods.

Still, in Britain and America, organic food companies have a great business model, convincing people of the tenuous virtues of their produce, and having people completely buy it all. In North America for instance, this is a market that’s been growing about 20% a year - and it’s been doing this for 20 years too. If you are looking for a total market share figure, organic foods have about 3% of the market. The reason it is good news that we can now prove that organic foods are no more nutritious than regular food is that people won’t feel the need now to waste extra money on the uncertain benefits of premium priced groceries anymore.

So what exactly did they study in all these research papers that allowed them to tell with such certainty that organic foods were no better? To begin with, they found out that less than a third of all the studies ever done on organic foods were scientific. The rest of it was just shoddy science. In the studies that did take their stuff seriously, they found that there was no real difference between the one kind of produce and the other in how much Vitamin C they had, or how much they contributed to your daily intake of minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc or copper. Why, there is even a US study of the same kind that’s been done; and it’s even more credible for the fact that it’s been done by the Organic Center at Oregon, a body that tries to push organic food over mass-produced stuff.

But the study at the Organic Center did find an important difference that placed organic foods ahead of the ordinary stuff. In their findings, organic foods give you much better levels of polyphenols and wholesome antioxidants. Seeing that better antioxidants is one of the reasons organic foods are so special, this actually does go in favor of sticking with organic foods. They found that the levels of antioxidants that you get with organic foods is so great, that choosing them would give you the nutritional equivalent of an extra serving of fruit every day. And there is another reason to take organic foods too - less poison.

Organic foods are famously grown on organic manure and natural pest control techniques, and they don’t come with a residue of concentrated poison they spray on regular farm produce to keep pests from eating them into oblivion. And pesticides are particularly dangerous for young children, for the way their brains develop, and for the way their vital organs function. Organic farm produce and organically raised meat has to answer to a number of strict government regulations that govern the way chemicals are used in their production. The regulations are always difficult to implement of course, but they do have an effect.

So in the end, the bottom line is this - with the regular farm produce, you get all the nutrients and minerals you get with organic food. With the regular stuff though, you lose out on the antioxidants, and you do get a residual dose of farm pesticide. Is that worth the extra cash you have to pony up for it? That just happens to be a deeply subjective choice.

Spotted Zebra Caterers - How we began

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Spotted Zebra started over 10 years ago as a small home based catering company called Alpha & Omega Caterers. Started by Greg Bold, who at the time was a manager at Café Veneto, it grew from a little sandwich delivery business into a small home catering company.

Encouraged by the success of his business providing fresh meals prepared in daily, Greg ventured out into more elaborate catering, ensuring the same fresh ingredients and service. Within two years, Alpha & Omega could no longer cater from home as proper licenses and fat traps and health and safety regulations needed to be implemented. Purchasing extra equipment to handle the demand from a colleague led to a change in name to SPOTTED ZEBRA and a re-location to kitchens at Kirsten’s Mall in Westville.

Spotted Zebra’s are NOTICED, they stand out in the crowd and if anything, that is who we are!
We are not the largest catering company, or the fanciest, but we sure try to stand out and be noticed, offering the best service and the friendliest staff and by far the most enjoyable meals of all!

From Westville, our grew from 5 staff members into the ten man crew it is today. Spotted Zebra handles catering for both the corporate and private sectors in Durban and KZN. Our catering ranges from simple hot and cold snack platters to chiq butler style canapés. From the traditional spit braai for 40 friends and family to braai banquets for thousands. From breakfasts to Dinners and everything in between, Spotted Zebra simply loves good Durban food and that really is what we are about!

Quick hamburger recipes and ground beef recipes

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Easy ground beef recipes are my favorite accomplishment. Lol, for me they are simple as I like ground beef more than most everything else. If I had to choose one food it would be ground beef as it’s tasty and it’s so easy to blend it in with different things.

While I’m not a formally trained chef I have been cooking my own food for over 55 years. My grandmother started teaching me to cook at age 4 and the first thing she taught me was to fry a hamburger on the stove. I stood on a chair to flip the burgers and I learned to stay away from spattering grease. Cheeseburgers are my favorite meal.

If you’re looking for some quick hamburger recipes for the grill here’s a very simple yet tasty recipe you can use as your ace in the hole when you have company but need something easy to make.

As luck would have it this burger recipe for the grill is so simple you can have your guests help and have some fun at the same time. It’s pretty much a no fuss, no muss grill recipe and it’s so simple anyone can make it to perfection.

Basics for Chocolate Dessert Recipes for Halloween

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I love chocolate dessert recipes any time of year, but especially during the autumn and Halloween. I enjoy cooking and sharing the results with others.

Chocolate comes processed in many forms, including powdered, chips, and bars. With these simple forms, thousands of original chocolate recipes can be created. Among other treats, chocolate bars, crunches, cookies, cakes, pies, and brownies all equal chocolate satisfaction.

One chocolate recipe that can be altered in so many ways is the chocolate cake. Interesting enough, the basic packaged chocolate cake mix can serve as a platform for a chocolate dessert ‘made in heaven”. Combine Dutch-processed cocoa, sugar, a dab of butter and a little water to form a rich liquid you can swirl through the prepared batter just before baking. The result is a sinfully rich cake fit for a Queen – or a chocolate-craving King.

“Organic”, “All-Natural” - Do these Labels acctually mean Healthy Food to You?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

All you want is simple healthy food; you don’t know what goes into the stuff they serve at restaurants, and so, you feel that nothing can quite compare to the honest and simple fare you can rustle up right in your kitchen. So you head down to the portals of your trusted local supermarket, and you look for the cuts that you trust - hopefully, you’ll find chicken that’s free range, naturally raised beef and hygienically butchered healthy meat in general. You do see plenty of reassuring labels on all the packages all around the butcher’s brightly-lit glass case, but there is a little voice at the back of your mind that wonders if these labels really do mean what they seem to mean. Well, you would do well to trust that healthy skepticism your mind is capable of; for as we are about to see, most of the time, those labels usually mean nothing wholesome at all.

Let’s start with an old favorite - free range chicken. What exactly is it that you believe free range chicken is when you see those neat packages at the supermarket? Plump healthy birds roaming the plains, pecking at a delicious worm here and a little grain there? Well, yes and no. The Department of Agriculture is the authority that looks at each manufacturer’s practices, and decides on whether or not to award a free range cerificate. According to their standards, a free range chicken has to be allowed to be outdoors more than 50% of their lives. But the department is quite flexible on what “the outdoors” can actually end up meaning. It could mean the wonderful open bucolic setting you imagine, or it could mean a cage that’s 3 feet wide as opposed to the normal 15 inches of the battery farm. Just going down and getting a few ingredients for a home-cooked healthy food can turn out to be quite a study in hairsplitting.

Now the term free range is important not just for the amount of personal space you imagine each chicken gets; free range in your mind, is important also for the way it seems to suggest a certain dignity that goes into the process of bringing food to the table. You imagine that the bird is brought up “organically”, that it is brought up in the country in a way that is not “artificial”. These are some of the most misused terms in the food industry though, and so much could go wrong in any attempt you make to interpret what they might mean just by the sound of them. People are typically so concerned about bringing home healthy food that they will gladly pay twice for “organic” chicken. And the poultry industry sees no problem with exploiting this market with trickily-labeled meat. The first step there would be to get the USDA’s approval for the use of the term organic on their packaging. If your chicken package doesn’t bear the certification stamps - the USDAs Organic seal, and the seal of the Secretary of Agriculture, you can be pretty sure that your chicken never saw any greenery, any open sky or any organic feed.

Okay, how about the other certifications we tend to look for and make our purchase decisions by - “No growth stimulants or added hormones”, and “All natural- minimally processed/no artificial ingredients”? Surely there is no way that any farmer could find a way around these declarations is there? Now two out of three beef cattle in the US are pumped full of growth hormones to make them grow bigger, faster. The USDA does approve of the hormones used; it says that when you eat beef raised on hormones, those hormones are not passed on to you. If that is so, how come the European Union has banned it? Europe believes that the hormones used in meat farming gets into our food, and harms our reproductive systems - people who are affected by these hormones typically have lower sperm counts and really early menarche. If you don’t see the specific declaration that no growth hormones were used, you are in trouble. The “All-natural” claim for instance doesn’t include a no-hormone assurance. The problem is, the USDA has no real rules for any of this; so the manufacturer can use this to mean whatever he wants it to mean. When it comes right down to it, there really are no guarantees for how healthy you food source is when everything comes from a massive industrial effort. Profits almost always trump any interest the manufacturer might have in really doing a meaningful job.

Pump Espresso Machines Produce Perfect Espresso

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Do you love a good cup of espresso? Prefer to brew it in your own kitchen? Then you must buy a certain type of espresso machine called a pump espresso machine. The pump espresso machine is ideal for coffee drinkers who want cafe style coffee but don’t want to have to go to the cafe to get it. They are available in a huge range of styles and colors to complement any interior design and they look great sitting on your kitchen counter. Plus they are not that expensive when you take into account how much money you will save on buying espresso. When choosing espresso machines, you need to be certain to pick up a pump machine since this sort of machine uses steam which is what will supply the most traditional flavor. If you are fed up with paying inflated coffeehouse prices but don’t want to curtail your daily cup of espresso, then then a pump espresso machine will be a wise expenditure for you since it could save you money every single day while still letting you relax in your own kitchen with your morning cup.

Dealing with a Milk Food Allergy Baby Has

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Milk is what you feed your infant; milk is what your infant is capable of digesting. If it isn’t mothers milk, it has to be a baby formula made out of cow’s milk. There is just no way to escape milk as food for the baby. But what do you do if your baby is allergic to milk -or more specifically, to the proteins in cows milk? Anyone involved with a food allergy, baby or adult, has it especially tough when it comes to milk. It affects 3% of all babies. Thankfully, they outgrow milk allergies.

What is a milk allergy anyway? It is a certain kind of food allergy baby might have when the immune system in the body mistakes the protein in cow’s milk (or the protein in goats milk or soy milk)for some kind of alien poison. A child with such an allergic attack can become really irritable and restless as its body tries to fight what it thinks is a poison.

So what do you do if this is the food allergy baby has? Certainly, you take your baby to the doctor for advice on what alternatives there might be. This kind of the tendency, they say, could be genetic - handed down through the genes. Thankfully, any child will outgrow this by the time they grow to be five years of age.

You need to be able to tell the difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance though. The former is more serious. You’ll be able to tell what kind of food allergy baby has, by the time he reach six months of age. Sometimes it is rapid onset - the moment baby is fed something, there is a reaction. Sometimes, it could be slow onset, and may not show up for up to 10 days afterwards.

When your baby has slow onset, the child may gag, become colicky, have skin rashes, and they have been blood specked diarrhea (not as scary as it sounds though). With rapid onset though, it can be quite severe. The child can even stop breathing; but the more common symptoms would be bumps on the skin, hives, wheezing and throwing up.

Your pediatrician will probably ask you if you have a family history of this. And then there will be tests. A milk food allergy baby has may not be easily findable on any one test. It’s difficult, because all these symptoms are things a baby can get with other diseases too. The doctor will order an oral challenge test to know with certainty. With this test, you’re supposed to stop giving your baby any milk for a week, and then you restart milk as the doctor watches for a few hours. There could be blood tests, or an allergy skin test. The doctor will make a little pin prick on the child’s skin, and put a little spot of milk in there to test for a reaction.

It’s possible that at least for now, your child may not be allergic to breast milk. If you happen to have any dairy at all in your own diet, the proteins from that could get into your milk and cause problems for your baby. So you need to cut off all dairy yourself for now. And your doctor will tell you about alternatives there might be. And in such a food allergy baby is supposed to get hypoallergenic formula - that’s formula that has all the proteins broken down so that the body doesn’t see them as the protein that it believes it is supposed to fight. Make sure that you don’t bring home partially hydrolyzed formula - these are the cheaper variety of hypoallergenic formula, and can be dangerous. And if you hang in there, in most cases, these things go away by the time the child is one year old.

Why Organic Food Is Better For You

Monday, June 21st, 2010

If you are like many other individuals, there is a good chance that you have heard that organic foods are healthier to eat. This may have caught your attention. If you are uncertain about making the switch to organic foods, you may be looking for reasons why you should. One of the most common questions asked is why organic foods are better? For a number of answers to that question, please continue reading on.

When it comes to organic foods, it is important to know that not just anyone can make organic foods. There are strict standards. Foods and organic food companies that are certified by the Quality Assurance International group (QAI) must undergo rigorous tests and meet very high standards. When this is done, all foods should be stamped with a Certified Organic by QAI sticker or label. This certification helps to give many comfort in knowing that the foods that they eat are truly healthy.

Another one of the many reasons why organic food is better for you is because it usually tastes better. This means that you and other eaters are more likely to eat more organic foods, as well as stick with organic foods or start a fully organic diet. These steps can help to improve your health. This is mostly due in part because vegetables and fruits are grown without the assistance of pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals. Clean soil, which is required when growing organic foods, is likely to produce better results, which should mean better tasting food.

It has also been said that organic foods can help to lower the risk of cancer. Although some pesticides that farmers use are considered safe by many, there are still a number of risks, including a risk of cancer. This is alarming, but it is also something that many individuals are not aware of. Although the EPA does consider many chemicals, including weed killers and insect killers to be dangerous, they are still used on many of the foods, namely fruits and vegetables, that are sold today. This is not something that you have to worry about when buying organic foods. That is why many claim that organic foods can reduce your chances of cancer.

Although there are a number of benefits to eating organic foods, especially where health and wellness is concerned, many individuals are concerned with the cost. Yes, organic food does cost more money, but many still consider it to be well worth the cost. Some ask themselves if it is even possible to put a price tag on health. Even with the high costs of organic food, it is still possible to save money. You can do this by using organic food coupons, searching for organic food sales, and stocking up when you do find those sales. Many stores outline their weekly sales in store sale fliers or online. Organic food coupons can be found online or in weekend newspaper inserts.

Since there are a number of benefits to eating organically, you may be serious about doing so. If you are, you will find that you have a number of different options, in terms of organic food purchase points. Organic food, including fresh food, is sold online and locally. Your local options tend to include the organic food section at your supermarket or a specialty organic food stores. See gourmet foods here.

Starting Baby With Rice Cereal

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Most doctors will tell you to give your baby rice cereal for their first solid food. It’s not really solid, but it does present a different type of food and will be a bit harder to digest than the breast milk or formula your baby has been having exclusively up until this point. As long as you wait for the right age, and give the cereal in the correct way, you should not have too many problems when you start. Things have changed, and doctors have different recommendations with cereals that you should follow when starting.

Rice cereal is still the first cereal or food that is recommended by doctors. This is because it is very easy to digest and causes very little digestive upset. However, if you feed it to your baby too soon, they could have excess gas and other stomach upset because their bodies are not yet able to fully digest the cereal. Do not start before your doctor tells you to. Eating cereal is an addition to most formula or breast feedings at first, and will not make your baby sleep through the night. Do not start rice cereal too early for that reason alone.

You can start, for the most part, giving rice cereal when your baby is between four and six months of age. They should have great head and neck control, and should be able to sit up while supported, and later sit up on their own. If they can not sit up, they are not going to be able to swallow the rice cereal in the right way and they could choke. Baby should be interested in your eating habits, and they will have to learn to use their tongue in a different way. Be patient when you start and don’t give them too much.

Do not feed rice cereal to your baby through a bottle. They should start right away eating from a spoon. The only time bottle feeding cereal is done is for reflux reasons, but you should never do it otherwise. They need to learn to eat from a spoon and this is the time to do it. Start out with very watery consistency (mixing the cereal with breast milk or formula) and only give a few bits. After they seem to get the hang of it, you can allow the cereal to be a bit thicker and they can have more of it. They may have it twice a day once they get the hang of it.

Rice cereal does not agree with all babies. Some parents skip it and go to oatmeal because they feel the oatmeal is a better choice. Most babies can do this without problems. Oatmeal single grain cereal can be started and fed to baby in the very same way that rice cereal is given. If you feel your baby is having problems with cereal, talk to your doctor about what is going on and what they think you should do. Some babies start cereal late and that is okay, as their bodies simply are not ready for it.

Choosing the Right Electric Ice Cream Maker

Friday, May 7th, 2010

There can be no doubt that ice cream is extremely well liked - a situation that is especially apparent with the quantity of outlets, and in particular ice cream stands, to be found during the summer time at the beach, by the pool and at theme parks and other places of entertainment.

During the warm months you can find ice cream on sale at just about any time and any place - along with a great many diferent flavors.

Ice cream is invariably fun to enjoy away from home, and is also an increasingly popular choice at home - and making homemade ice cream has grown to be popular also, not least because of the opportunity to follow an enormous number of receipes or experiment and make your very own.

Making ice cream might seem to be time consuming but the ice cream makiing process isn’t that difficult and doesn’t require much time as you might think. Additionally it is an effective way of spending time with your kids and having some family fun.

Nowadays there are plenty of different kinds of ice cream makers to pick from - and they are comparatively cheap. Some of the less costly models are noisier and can take quite a while to produce ice cream, The more pricey models contain built in compressors - although generally pre freezing just isn’t required these days. You can also choose between a hand cranked or electric motor mode, the majority of which turn off automatically once the ice cream reaches the proper consistency.
