Recipes For Kids – A Simple Cake Or Other Dessert Recipes

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Find some fun recipes for kids and get them baking and cooking early. Younger children love to help and this can mean they will want to help you with dinner. All kids should be introduced to the basics of cooking and baking while they are still young and wishing to learn. If you encourage children to work with food they are more likely to eat better and grow up with better eating habits.

Like most women, I have a major sweet tooth and am absolutely helpless in front of any dessert. One of my all time favorites has been mosaic jello. I know, its kind of odd, but who doesn’t like jello? And this recipe takes it to a whole other level. It is a simple and quick dessert; and very affordable to make.

The first recipes for kids that you can try should be easy ones that require little or no heat. This means that children as young as four or five can help. You can teach them how to make a salad, though you want handle the sharp knife. If you have anything going in that can be cut with a butter knife, you can help them learn how to chop. They will be more willing to eat what they helped make, which means they get their veggies each time they help.

As a matter of fact, at one of our beloved major stores a mosaic jello is sold over six times more expensive made than to make it yourself. It can be perfect for your child’s next birthday party instead of ice cream and can even be color coordinated.

Don’t forget to add some baking recipes for kids when you teach them. You should look for very simple cake or other dessert recipes that they can help you measure out and mix up. They can learn to use a hand mixer, but you should never leave them alone with one until they are older.

Cakes With Wow Factor

Monday, August 15th, 2011

For any really special occasion, there is usually a cake as a centerpiece for guests at meal time. Most commonly this happens for birthdays, Christmas and weddings, along with many other meaningful family celebrations.

If responsibility for producing the cake has fallen on your shoulders, don’t worry, there are plenty of ideas floating around on the Internet, not only for recipes, but also for decorating cakes to give them the wow factor.

The key for successfully decorating a cake is to theme it to the occasion, so for example, at Christmas use holly leaves as a theme, or the child’s name or age for a kid’s birthday party. If you prefer, you could commission a professional to create the cake for your special occasion, however often the emotional connection with the event means you will be able to achieve a more special result yourself, particularly if you are preparing for a one off event such as a christening cake.

Because all your family will be present, working out the best christening cake decorations could be rather unnerving, so using ideas on the web for inspiration is a great starting point. Just remember that family occasions are defined by sentiment, so your contribution will no doubt be perfect, and compliment the day perfectly!

Cupcakes – The New Birthday Cake

Friday, July 8th, 2011

I’m sure you’ve noticed how popular cupcakes have become. Specialty cupcake shops are popping up all over! And people everywhere are signing up for classes so they can learn how to decorate cupcakes. If you normally make a birthday cake for your kids every year, why not think about a tower of cupcakes instead?

That’s what I did and it was easy. I learned the basics, then more detailed work and before I knew it, I was decorating cupcakes like crazy! Of course if you already know how to decorate cakes, then learning to decorate cupcakes is a snap. You can decorate them with buttercream and fondant and just about any little decoration can be incorporated into your cupcake designs.

If you want to take a class or sign up for a cake decorating course, there are a few options for you. One is to look up your local crafts store and see if they offer cake decorating classes. Or go over to Wilton.com for written instructions and video tutorials, and of course you can usually find a youtube video, but personally, that’s the last place I look.

After I did my research, I ended up getting a taking Wilton’s course at my local crafts store. Cupcake decorating is loads of fun and I hope you’ll have as much fun as I am having!

Wedding Cake Cookies

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Last Summer, just two days before my Son’s wedding day, he called me and told me his fiance’ says they need a wedding favor for the guests. I had just seen the new Wilton wedding cookie article and thought that would be fairly easy and quick to do. So I told him I would do it.

Surprise surprise, it took longer than I had thought. After all, with one oven it takes a while to bake 220 cookies, not to mention the counter space it takes to lay them out to cool and to frost. I had cookies on the dining room table, the coffee table and even had to get out the tv trays! But I had figured out a method to package up the cooled ones and make room for cookies just out of the oven. And when my daughter got home, she assisted me so the task wasn’t quite so daunting.

Then when the baking was about done, we quickly got set up to decorate. I’m a cake decorator so at least I had some cake decorating skills, so decorating a few cookies should be a piece of cake, ha ha! I had only looked online at some design ideas, and at this point, I only had the colors figured out. It was a no brainer since they were the wedding colors, duh!

But after a few practice cookies, (using the misfits) I relatively quickly came up with a simple design and continued to pipe like a crazy woman. I was piping cookies all night until I was a dead woman walking, albeit I was actually standing and after all the bending over to decorate, I couldn’t stand up straight to save my life!

But I did finally finish decorating those cookies and they looked good. I first used a white glaze, then piped a swag design on each tier, with little dots on the sides of the tiers and a nice little bouquet of roses on the top.

I had to wait until the very last minute to get them packaged because I didn’t want the frosting to get squished. So then I got help from my husband to get them in their little boxes wrapped with a ribbon and bow, and finished just in time to get ready for the big day.

We got them safely to the reception area safely. My son and daughter-in-law loved them and everyone had one to take home. All was good and by the end of the day I was exhausted! But it was the most beautiful day they could have asked for….and me too! I will never forget it.

When my daughter gets married this summer, I will be doing the same for their wedding. Maybe I can get them to look just like the wedding cake I’m making for them!

How To Use A Milk Frother For Your Speciality Drink or Desert Recipe

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

A milk frother is one of those kitchen gadgets you either use consistently or not very often. People who use them frequently see the value in developing speciality drinks like cappuccinos, lattes and even hot chocolate. Once users develop a taste for frothy milk they generally want to continue using the device in the kitchen because it helps to enhance the flavors in recipes. Not just specialty drinks but also desserts and main meal entrees.

If you are considering purchasing an automatic or hand held frother, here are some examples of how a milk frother can be used.

Speciality Espresso Drinks

Most espresso based drinks have a froth (or foam) component to it. For example, a cup of cappuccino is topped off with milk froth as is cafe au lait. Espresso afecionados often swear by their milk frothers as the gadget of choice in their kitchen if they do not have an espresso machine.

Dessert Sauces

There are many dessert recipes that have some type of frothy ingredient in it…for example a custard or merenge dessert. If a recipe calls for “stiff” milk or cream, pop out your frother to do the job. For any drink that requires milk, you can “stiffen” the milk a bit to give the beverage a more richer texture.

Carrot Cake Recipes

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Why do people put carrots in cake? The history of putting carrots in cake actually dates back to the medieval period. During that time, sweeteners for baking were scarce and very expensive. Carrots contain a lot of sugar, which was the perfect substitute for sweeteners in peoples’ baking adventures. Plus, they were a lot easier to come by and a lot more affordable. Using carrots in cakes was such a success; it has obviously continued down through the years and is still a favorite among many in today’s era. There are lots of varying recipes online and in cookbooks.

Everyone will claim that their recipe for carrot cake is the best. Perhaps their recipe is the best, however, each person has their own preferences and taste buds. You may find that one recipe is a bit more time consuming or complicated and you want to stick to the easiest recipe possible. You may not care about how much time is involved; you simply want to make the very best that you can possibly can. No matter what your preferences or plans happen to be, there are lots of excellent recipe sites to be found.

Basics for Chocolate Dessert Recipes for Halloween

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I love chocolate dessert recipes any time of year, but especially during the autumn and Halloween parties. I enjoy cooking and sharing the results with others.

Chocolate comes processed in many forms, including powdered, chips, and bars. With these simple forms, thousands of original chocolate recipes can be created. Among other treats, chocolate bars, crunches, cookies, cakes, pies, and brownies all equal chocolate satisfaction.

One chocolate recipe that can be altered in so many ways is the chocolate cake. Interesting enough, the basic packaged chocolate cake mix can serve as a platform for a chocolate dessert ‘made in heaven”. Combine Dutch-processed cocoa, sugar, a dab of butter and a little water to form a rich liquid you can swirl through the prepared batter just before baking. The result is a sinfully rich cake fit for a Queen – or a chocolate-craving King.

Ice Cream Wedding Cake

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Though not wildly popular, some people like to have an ice cream wedding cake in the place of the standard cake that most have at their wedding receptions. There are a few good reasons why these are not commonly used, but that does not mean that you can not have one if that is what you really want. The conditions of your wedding have to be just right, though many reception venues that serve food can also serve ice cream cake without too much trouble. You just have to make a few adjustments.

The biggest problem that most have with an ice cream wedding cake is that they are almost impossible to display. At many receptions, the cake is set out before the guests arrive so that everyone can see it. It remains there until it is cut, which can mean it sits out for two or even three hours. As you can imagine, this is not a good idea with ice cream cake. The cake will have fallen apart and slide all over the place by then. They will not stay put at room temperature. Unless your reception is outside in the middle of winter, leaving it sit out is out of the question.

You can either present your ice cream wedding cake right before you choose to cut and serve it, or you can think of other options. Perhaps you can have a small regular cake made and put out, which you can then leave at room temperature and can also cut if you wish. You can then have the staff, or whomever is helping you, serve the ice cream cake instead of the cake you have out. You could also give your guests a choice between the two of them. Just make sure the cake is chilled until you have to cut and serve it. Otherwise, you will have a disaster.

If you decide you would like the ice cream wedding cake for your big day, shop around for someone who can make what you want. Most ice cream cakes are small, so it might be hard to find someone who can make one to the scale that you need. These are heavier than regular cakes, so you may not be able to get a highly stacked cake. Instead, see what other alternatives they have for wedding cakes made from ice cream. You can also have a small one to display with sheet cake waiting to be served, as is done with regular cake as well.

An ice cream wedding cake can be just as beautiful as the regular cakes that may choose for their wedding days. These are a lot of fun, especially if you have a lot of children coming to your wedding, or if you are getting married when you know it is going to be hot outside. Some may not have an idea that they are looking at an ice cream cake until they are served. You may also find that you have more choices for flavors when you go with ice cream and cake in one beautiful looking package.

Serving Individual Wedding Cakes

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

When you get married, you have time to think about what you feel would make a perfect day for you and your husband or wife to be. There is a lot of planning to do, so hopefully you have a lot of time to think about what you want, and also that you can find what you want. Instead of going with a traditional wedding cake, you can go with something a bit different but every bit as elegant if you want to try something new. Some couples today are having individual wedding cakes served to their guests instead of slicing up one large cake. It’s a very neat idea, but it is more expensive in many cases.

Individual wedding cakes can be a lot of fun. You can go with something as simple as cupcakes if you are having a more informal wedding, or you can go with the expensive cakes that are made to look like tiny cakes. These look like miniature versions of the larger cakes that you may get for a wedding. These are more time consuming for your bakery to make, so you are going to have to pay a bit more to serve the same number of people than you would pay if you were getting a whole, large cake. However, these can look amazing, and if you want them, they are certainly going to make you very happy.

These individual wedding cakes can be much easier to serve to your guests. There is no cutting involved. Instead, they are served on a plate, sometimes they come on their own plates that can be returned to the bakery after your reception is done. Depending on how many people you have coming, many of the cakes can be placed on display before serving. If you have a large guest list, you can display some and then have the rest waiting in the serving or kitchen area to be served when it is time for cake.

One thing that puts individual wedding cakes above your more traditional wedding cake is that you can have a large variety of flavors. You could have as many different flavors of cake as you want to have, but do remember this can cause some confusion. Anything too exotic may not go over well with your guests. However, if you have three different flavors you like, and you can not choose or you want your guests to choose, you can have your cakes made in those flavors. You can also have each decorated in one theme while they all look different. These can be a lot of fun.

Don’t forget to order small cake boxes that will fit the size of your individual wedding cakes, as there are always going to be people that want some to go. Save one, or have one made special, just for the cutting of the wedding cake, and have one aside if you would like to freeze it for your first anniversary. Wrap it up tight and it will last until your first year and will probably taste pretty good too if you do it right.

Bridal Shower Cakes

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Bridal showers are among the highlights of every girl’s dreams and as such they should be fun packed and unforgettable. An interesting way of livening up bridal showers is by using bridal shower cakes which can either be edible or just for art like towel bridal shower cakes. Coming up with a suitable cake for a bridal shower should not necessarily be a headache, rather it should be a period of girl bonding and just hanging out. Bridal shower cakes should be designed patiently with the bride in mind if you want her to remember you for a long time.

Designing bridal shower cakes requires you to get as much information as possible regarding the bride. Get to know of her tastes, preferences, likes, hobbies, favorite flavors and anything else that you can gather will surely be an added advantage. Conceptualize the cake and put the design on paper based on the information you collected on the bride. If for example, she likes vanilla flavor and her hobbies include reading romantic books, it’s not a bad idea to design a cake shaped like layers of books with feminine colors and vanilla is included among the ingredients.

Conversely, you can design bridal shower cakes based on the wedding gown that she will be dressed in on her wedding day. Run the design by the baker you think is best suited for the job at least five days in advance, to facilitate the baking, icing, designing and transport. Make sure that the colors on the cake match or complement the theme of the bridal shower. Once the cake arrives, store it in an even dry place where it’s not likely to be tampered with and if you plan to surprise the bride, please keep it well stored.

Towel bridal shower cakes are also an attractive way to create a bridal shower center piece and they can be presented as gifts. First ensure that the colors of the towels you are planning to use go with the décor color of the bridal shower. Then, decide the purpose of the towel bridal shower cakes for they can be given as gifts, they can hold the gifts or be the center pieces. Once that is established, fold two large towels along their length twice and pin the two towels together. Roll the pinned towels placing any gifts between the rolls, and pin them together at the edges and place the edged side facing downwards. Go for two smaller towels and repeat the process to create a second layer and finally use two hand towels to create the top layer. Wrap each layer with ribbons then pin them all together to form a three layered cake. Present it to the bride together with some tissue to wipe away any tears of joy.

And the Best Hot Air Popcorn Makers Are…

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

While popcorn is one of the healthiest snacks you can enjoy, the traditional ways of preparing it were not. In years past, we used to make popcorn by heating it with oil on a stove, something which current stove-top popcorn makers still do. But a healthier alternative appeared in the 1970s – the use of hot air to pop corn. Hot air popcorn makers work by spinning popcorn kernels in a central chamber and exposing them to hot air to pop them. The most popular popcorn makers are those made by Orville Redenbacher, a brand which is most associated with its line of gourmet popcorn. Its hot air popcorn makers are marketed under the brand name Presto; the most popular model is the Presto 04820 PopLite, a device that at first glance, resembles a blender that has been turned upside down. The reviews for this popcorn popper have been overwhelmingly positive, with many calling it one of the best hot air popcorn poppers they’ve ever owned. Its positive features include ease of use, little wasted popcorn (nearly all kernels popped) and the quick popping time; popping corn using the hot air popper was also more economical and healthier than microwave popcorn.
