When Buying Wine – Use Taste – Not Price!

Buying Wine – Use Taste – Not Price!

All wine drinkers whether old or new want to acquire wine that matches their palate. Wine is just someones opinion because our palates all differ. A good wine is one you found and like. It is that elementary. I have purchased some valuable wine that I have been really disappointed in. But then I have bought some new world wine from New Zealand that has been great.
The old saying ” serve the guests the best wine” is true. Enjoy the less expensive, less intense wines during the week. There are many nice wines that won’t bust your budget.
I’ll serve friends an $8 bottle of wine if it tastes good to me. I just tell my guests that it is “just a little wine I found.” Price is not as significant as taste. If you find a wine you like make sure you hide a few away for unannouced guests.
When buying wine for guests a friend of mine has a good plan. She always starts out with a very nice bottle of wine. Then as the evening progresses she shares a wine that cost less. I always have a great time and enjoy the wine! And she doesn’t spend as much so she can invite guests more often.
When purchasing wine you will need some basic wine information… … … …

  1. Being familiar with knowledge about wine is a asset.
  2. Knowing some of the wine words and terms is a must.
  3. Knowing the types of foods you will be serving. Will you be having spicy or subtle flavors? Meat – Potatoes – Vegetarian? Sushi or spaghetti? What the type of appetizers served?
  4. Do your guests drink and enjoy a red or a white style wine
  5. Do they drink and enjoy wine often?

TIP: Google a wine and food chart before you go shopping. It is good to know what type of wines are recommended for the food you want to serve.

The absolute perfect site for the wine newbie.

This site is loaded with a lot of great wine information for the wine beginner. Check out the free wine knowledge class here. Don’t be in a hurry because you need to read some pages to bring you up to speed..

No Respectable Wine Shop to Buy At?

It is always possible to make a nice wine purchase if you use the Internet and a little common sense. It is not hard to purchase wine online. To see my favorite online shop check out out the Purchase Wine page which is perfect for the newbie. I enjoy this online wine shop because there is no shipping costs. To make the free shipping work, they sell wine in increments of 6. ( mix & match of 6 – 12 or 18).This is no problem because I always try to mix up a case of 12.
Their experts screen wines from undiscovered vineyards which is interesting and fun. I don’t know how they find these vineyards but the wine is always pleasing. They also supply wine descriptions and wine makers notes on the wines.
I always check out the wine specials and wines under $15. There is always a good special!
Salut!!!!

Wine Making At Home: How Enjoyable It Is?

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Shops to meet the needs of wine making at home also function as meeting places for local wine hobbyists. These people love to share their experiences & even pass a couple of bottles of wine around. They can help you to get a leg up on home wine making & keep you updated on what is hot & what isn’t in the wine hobby world.S Space isn’t really a problem. A small corner in your basement or shed will serve the purpose well. Just make sure the storage space where you let the wine mature is dark & cool. Fermentation is one of the most important steps in home wine making.

The temperature must be controlled, along with the use of the right quality of yeast, which can bring a different taste to the wine. It’s necessary to take care to prevent oxidation of the grapes by fermentation to preserve the rich flavor of the wine. This fermentation process can take anywhere from 10-30 days before completing the final phase of wine making at home. Usually, the fermented wine is stored in containers & they can be strained to get a clear wine, which can be bottled & transferred to glass bottles or containers.

At least there will be a month before your first bottle of home wine and even longer if you follow the recommended ripening periods. If you’re willing to spend a little, wait a little more & get something much more than what you paid for, then wine at home can be the activity for you!

You must wait at least six months before you can get a taste of wine, but it is worth all the effort. This is indeed a great pleasure in wine making at home & enjoy the rich flavor, which gives a feeling of joy & satisfaction that can be shared among your friends & loved ones. Making wine at home can be a great hobby for those who like to experiment with different combinations of fruits such as strawberries, grapes & pears along with the use their creativity to make wonderful wine.

Wine Tasting Tips For Dumb Dumbs

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Are you looking for some way to entertain your friends that’s different and will be memorable? Then perhaps this little tongue in cheek guide we call Wine Tasting Tips For Dumb Dumbs will help.

Wine tasting can be an expensive affair if you supply all the wine. For a great informal gathering that doesn’t break the bank, a BYOB affair will do just fine. But before you call to invite your friends, you need to have everything mapped out for yourself. For instance, what kind of theme will you have for the wine tasting event? To decide, you need to familiarize yourself somewhat with wine knowledge. For instance, a great way to set up a wine tasting event would be to take a certain kind of wine, reds for instance, and then to have everyone bring wines of that kind from every part of the world. Australia is famous for its Shiraz; Grenache is from Spain; Cabernet is well regarded in the US; and Malbec has put Argentina on the map. With a little research, by checking out a wine review magazine like Wine Spectator you could easily come up with a whole world tour of wines.

Now that you have a theme in mind, you need to start planning for a wine tasting event that will make the most of your theme. You don’t do a wine tasting event to try to be pretentious. It’s really all about learning how to appreciate life’s finer tastes, in this case learning how wines can be different in subtle and delectable ways. The first thing you do when people show up with all the bottles of wine is to make them nameless. Cover every wine bottle with some wrapping paper. This way, people won’t look at the label and say to themselves, “Oh, this is a Barolo – I’ve heard it’s supposed to be world famous wine; I better like it!”. With the bottles all covered up, people can judge the wines they taste with their own unbiased tastes. That’s really the subtle secret to enjoying wine, personal preference and not price or reputation.

For each bottle of wine you need a tasting sheet. This way everyone write tasting notes on what they thought of each wine. There is some debate around wine tasting about whether you’re supposed to drink every sip or swish and spit it out. But if you pour only about an ounce or two of every selection, you can again leave it to personal choice. You might want to have a dump bucket for everyone so that they can empty their glasses. And make sure that everyone has plenty of water to drink between tastings to clear their palate and also to make sure they stay hydrated. Adding snacks and/ or food is also highly recommended since pairing wine with food ultimately releases a majority of the flavors.

But we kind of got ahead of ourselves. Before you actually get to tasting, you are supposed to savor the wine with your other senses. Wine connoisseurs take a lot of pleasure in the color and clarity of the wine, and its own unique bouquet. They hold it up to the light to appreciate the richness and the color, and to note its “legs”, a myth in wine tasting that is perpetuated to accommodate a little old world upper class snobbery. Legs are simply the fact that alcohol (ethanol) in wine evaporates more quickly than water. Wine tasters swirl the wine in their glass to release the bouquet and observe the wine holding onto the glass. Eventually gravity takes over, the water’s surface tension is broken, and it runs down creating “legs”.

Wine aficionados then begin to identify the various tastes and smells, but to discuss all of these possible variations is the topic of another commentary. This is still just an introduction, Wine Tasting Tips For Dumb Dumbs, remember? Take your time and enjoy the event as a social gathering with good friends, enjoy the wine and the tasting note comparisons, but you don’t need to put on any airs.

When you be Aware of your Alcohol Consumption

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Often when I teach alcohol classes people tell me, “Watching how much I drink is hard but it’s even harder when…”. So these students recognize that sometimes it’s easy to watch your drinking but sometimes it’s really hard. Based on my research talking to my clients, here’s a short list of the different times that you should be aware of your alcohol consumption:

  1. At a Party
  2. During Holidays
  3. Out on the Town with Friends
  4. At a Sports Game
  5. When you Have Company
  6. During a Meal
  7. Watching Television
  8. When It’s Hot
  9. On Vacation
  10. When You’re Depressed or Sad

So maybe all these occasions don’t apply to you, but probably some of them do. This is one thing that I teach my alcohol awareness class students. Be careful, but know when to be extra careful. So if you know you are going to a party or going to a baseball game and it’s a time that you tend to want to drink, that’s the time to be extra extra cautious about how much you drink. And if it helps have a friend or loved one help you monitor your drinking for that extra set of eyes.

What Are The Different Tips To Accommodate Food And Wine?

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Don’t know which Chardonnays have fruity undertones? Don’t fret.

You can find out just by looking at the descriptions on the bottle. You can also bet that a Chardonnay from Oregon will have a crisp hint of apple in its flavor. You can make nice food and wine pairings that work with the undertones in the drink.

Considering this, you don’t necessarily have to subject yourself to the food and wine rule: reds with red meats, whites with fish and poultry. If you prefer red wine even though you are having fish, then choose red.

There are plenty of nice options to consider that have lighter, fruity undertones.

If you want to learn more infos about food and wine, stop by and read my article.

The Process of Pairing Food And Wine

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Many people love a great meal and for some of us, a great meal requires more than a well prepared dish. Food and wine just go hand in hand. You can truly turn a nice meal into something spectacular if you make the right pairings. All it takes is a little know-how and some simple general rules to follow.

The process of pairing food and wine isn’t as complex as some may believe. Don’t think that you have to be a vineyard snob to appreciate a great glass that offers the right bouquet and texture for your meal. When it comes to food and wine, the only real rule is that you consider what you truly like.

It’s all about flavor. Stronger flavors in foods require heartier wines to hold up to them. For example, you want to serve food and wine at your next gathering. Why not appeal to flavorful as well as light pallets? This way, you are certain to make a real splash in your presentation.

How To Prevent And Cure Hangover – Best Natural Hangover Cures

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

If you have to go to work, then probably the highest on the list of natural hangover cures for you is the greasy comfort meal. Some people prefer McDonald’s cheeseburgers, claiming that they have a secret cure for hangovers. Eggs and spicy food are also very popular worldwide.

Spicy food diverts the body’s attention away from coping with the alcohol to coping with the spices, which are also a toxin. The high fat food works the same way. The body turns to the food and forgets about alcohol, and hopefully lightening a hangover.

For the set up of your wine making operation, you will need a 7.9 gallon primary fermentor, one that has a drilled gasket lid.

This will be used to grow the yeast and as well to allow lots of oxygen to your wine.
