No Need For Flavored Coffee

Friday, April 30th, 2010

It’s a personal thing, but I just don’t get flavored coffee. If you want a milkshake (because that’s what most flavored coffee ends up tasting like or turning into), then just get a milkshake. Don’t ruin a perfectly good cup of coffee by filling it with ghastly concotions dreamed up in some New Jersey foodstuffs lab.

The argument against flavored coffee is simple: Regular coffee tastes good. If you want it sweet, you can put some sugar or sweetener in it. If you’d like it a little thicker, you can put some milk in it. You can have it strong – espresso has all the wallop of two cups of coffee in about two ounces. You can have it creamy, like a cappuccino. You can mix it with brandy or irish whiskey or bailey’s or tequilia and cinnamon.

Just don’t mix it with vanilla soybean non dairy creamer that you got from the sugary treats aisle at the local supermarket. It doesn’t make sense to ruin good coffee with that kind of crap when you have so many other better choice to make when it comes to your daily cup of joe.

That said, there are some types of flavored coffee that are actually good ideas. These are the ones that actually roast the coffee beans with additional flavors added in, instead of dumping overly sweetened creamers into an already made cup of coffee.

Take, for example, almond flavored cofffe. You’ll find places that start with Arabica bean coffee, then add roasted almonds to the blend. Almonds are among the sweetest of nuts, and have a delicious, butter flavor. If you find arabica bean coffee that’s been roasted with almond flavors, then you’ve found a flavored coffee that’s worth sampling.

Incidently, almonds aren’t actually nuts. They’re seeds that you’ll find insde the fruit of, yes, the almond tree. They’re actually closely related to peaches and nectarines genetically. Though i’m not going to recommend peach or nectarine flavored coffee!

Antoher flavored coffee that makes some sense is amaretto flavored coffee. Amaretto is a popular liquor from the north of Italy, the Lombardy region, and it is from this tradition that amaretto flavored coffee comes. I personally find it to be too sweet and syrupy, but I’m not a fan of liquors in general and tend to prefer hard liquor like whiskey, vodka or tequila if I’m spicing up my coffee in that way.

Make Sure You Read Your Food Nutrition Facts

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A very dear friend of mine has been trying to lose weight for years to no avail. He has never been on a true diet, but he said he has tried to watch what he eats and exercise on a regular basis. He told me he has had a little success, but nothing close to the amount of weight he wants or needs to lose.

One day, we sat around brainstorming possible reasons that he was not losing weight. After a few minutes, he confessed that he never looked at the food nutrition facts listed on practically every package of food he bought. He said he just ate the amount of food that felt right to him and got plenty of exercise.

I asked him to prepare one of his usual lunches, which was a turkey sandwich, potato chips, iced tea, a piece of fruit and a snack cake. I counted up how many calories he was consuming, and it came to over 1,000 for that meal alone. He could not believe it, and I think he finally started to understand why he was having a hard time losing weight, especially when he said that his dinner typically had even more calories than lunch.

I decided to buy him a little gadget that weighs food, and told him to read the food nutrition facts on each item of food that he bought. If the serving size was measured in ounces, he could use the gadget to weigh out one serving of food. I also gave him two bits of advice.

The first thing I asked him to do was that to eat four or five small meals per day. I am not a doctor, but I have always been told that eating smaller meals more frequently will speed up your metabolism and allow you to lose weight quicker.

The second thing that I suggested was to eat between 1,400 and 1,600 calories per day, and continue on with his exercise routine. I was really not sure how many calories he needs for a day, but I had seen on a television show that had to do with weight loss that people were asked to consume that number of calories per day, and some of them were around his size.

He started to read the food nutrition facts, followed the advice on his caloric intake and kept his exercise up, and after the first week, he had lost five pounds. He said he could not believe it when he stepped on the scale and saw the number, saying it would have taken him a month to lose that amount before.

Within a year, he had dropped 85 pounds and was in a great shape. He told me that he read the food nutrition facts every day and kept his calorie count down, and that is what helped him. I think sometimes the answer to such things are right in front of you, if you’ll just look for them.

Is It Time For Food For Babies?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Parents often get excited when it comes time to start feeding baby foods that do not come out of a bottle or breast. It is a sign they are growing and maturing as they should, and also gives a bit of a break to a breastfeeding mom who may feel overwhelmed or have sore nipples from the increasingly long feedings. You may hear that friends give their children food like ice cream or fries very early on, but know this can be a big mistake. These are not healthy food for babies. This can cause digestion problems and painful gas. Look for signs that baby is ready for food, and then take it slow and easy.

Your baby must be ready for food for babies or you may have some long, sleepless nights ahead of you. You may have gotten your baby to sleep through the night by now, or perhaps they are only getting up once. If you give them food too soon, you are going to be up with the baby quite a bit, and it is not going to be a simple feed them and then put them back to sleep type of wake up call. Your baby may be in pain because their digestive system was not ready and they have painful gas they can not expel. They can have other discomfort as well. Start at the right time with cereals and/or simple vegetables to avoid this problem.

One of the signs that your little one is ready to be spoon fed food for babies is that your baby can sit up on his or her own. In some cases, doctors say that as long as they can sit up with some assistance from you, they can try to spoon feed as well. You do not want to feed a baby that is lying down or that has poor head control. They could easily choke. The state of sitting up also coincides with other maturity milestones in the body that may mean the digestive system is ready to deal with new foods that are more complex to digest than formula or breast milk.

Babies will probably not be ready for food for babies before four months old, and they should start by six months if they have not. However, all babies are different so use that as a rough guide. Your doctors recommendations will take their knowledge of medicine and your baby’s condition into consideration when they recommend when you should start. Always take their advice above all other. Remember that most babies can not easily digest anything with cow’s milk until they are a year old. The bulk of their nutrition should still come from formula or breast milk until that time.

Other signs that you can try food for babies would be small but unmistakeable signs. If your baby seems to respond to the smell of your cooking, and watches you intently while you are eating, they may be ready. They also have to have some tongue control. When they drink formula or from the breast, they thrust the tongue forward. They have to do the opposite when eating from a spoon. You can find out more about those signs and others to look for when you talk to your doctor about your baby and the new foods you hope to introduce.

How to Choose Scallops for Cooking

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

When selecting fresh scallops, inspect the color carefully. They should be slightly beige and show no traces of pink – a pink color indicates the scallops have passed their prime. They should not be swimming in liquid either. If previously frozen, do not refreeze! Refreezing, then thawing, produces a tough scallop. Ask the clerk to put your package inside a bag lined with ice.

Many scallops are treated with chemicals to make them absorb more water. This means you will pay more per pound, plus your scallops may not brown up nicely in a pan like you want.

Purchasing scallops, using these guidelines, assures a successful dish with any scallops recipes. Plan to prepare the scallops within 24 hours.

A Gift Basket for the Cheese Lover is Sure to Please!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Cheese is a healthy, delicious food, full of calcium and protein. In the past few years, the number and variety of cheese readily available at local supermarkets has grown, due to the newly adventurous American appetite for cheeses from every corner of the world. Filling a cheese gift basket with a dozen different cheeses is no longer a problem. The biggest problem is just narrowing down your choices to just a dozen.

Just a few decades ago, if you wanted Parmesan cheese to top your spaghetti, all you could find was processed powder in a foil can. Today, you can chooose from a number of fresh Parmesans, from the authentic Italian in wedges, to freshly shredded or grated types in resealable containers. Most Americans had never heard of fresh mozzarella. Deli choices used to be limited to the old stand-bys, Swiss, Cheddar, Jack and processed, color-added, sliced American cheese. You could hardly make a cheese gift basket from those selections!

Today, browsing the upscale supermarket deli cheese choices is enough to entice anyone’s palate. In fact, if you were to buy a bit of every cheese for sale, you could spend a small fortune. Monterey Jack is now available in a hot pepper or dill varieties. Smoked cheddar is another delicious item. Gouda, Edam, Brie, farmer’s cheese, Teleme, Havarti – in plain and flavor infused forms – are all there for the tasting. In fact, if you’re not acquainted with some of these, your deli clerk will be happy to serve you a sample slice, hoping to entice you to make a sale.

Part of the fun of assembling a cheese gift basket is that you get a chance to learn more about cheese. Every metropolitan area boasts at least a few good cheese shops and the staff are well versed in their products. Don’t feel shy about asking about the various exotic cheeses they have on display. In addition to getting to sample a taste, you’ll learn all about the origin and uses of each. These folks know their stuff and are more than willing to share their expertise. These shops also carry a number of crackers and breads which complement specific types of cheese. Learn the difference between Roquefort and bleu cheese. You may also find books dedicated to cheese, in a comprehensive dictionary format. Some cheese shops offer ready made cheese gift baskets and recipe cards. Gift baskets shipped abroad mean that anybody in the world can receive a delicious cheese gift.

Cheese and fruit are a traditional European dessert. Ask your cheese shop clerk for suggestions on cheese and fruit combinations. Slip a couple of varieties of fruit into your cheese gift basket for good measure. A few exotic recipe cards and perhaps a bottle of dessert wine will make an already spectacular basket complete. This gift is a winner, in anyone’s book.

Tassimo Coffee Makers

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

If you haven’t noticed, the world as a whole is in love with coffee. It really doesn’t matter where you reside, or what new country you visit; there is a good chance they consume java of some sort there. In more recent years, coffee has exploded as an entirely new phenomenon. It’s like people didn’t know there were so many options and wonderful selections to choose from. Therefore many individuals sought out the best coffee makers known to man. Simply because they wanted to have that superb brew in their home whenever they choose to. What coffee machine is on your counter?

There are plenty of stores and distributors out there selling some of the best coffee makers available. It all just depends on what type of java beverage or caffeinated coffee drink you prefer. If you like it hot and simple, you probably need a quality drip pot that produces both single cups servings and entire pots at a time. This way you do not have to waste any coffee when you crave a cup of your favorite blend. There are also some of the best coffee makers available for those that prefer espresso drinks. You can get some models that are manual and others that are fully automatic, making you a shot of espresso at the touch of a button. Prices range from $50 to over $5000.

The Tassimo coffee maker is extremely popular because it is easy to brew a great cup of coffee. The machine uses what’s called t-discs and each one has a barcode on the label so when you drop one in the machine reads the barcode and precisely determines exactly how much water, brew time, and tempurature for the particular beverage that you wanted. The machine can make one-cup servings of regular coffee, espresso, cappuccino, latte, tea, hot chocolate and various other drinks.

Vacuum Food Sealers and Bags

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Vacuum Sealer Bags are made of more than one layer, which makes them more resistant. These bags prevent your food from freezer burn. When food is in freezer it gets dried out, change its color and you have to throw it. With these bags, you do not have to worry about that. They prevent leaking and that way they keep flavor in, the same as before it has been packed.

Vacuum Sealer Bags are essential in proper food preserving. However, if you buy bags that can be reused and resealed, that means that you can use them more than one time and it is way of saving money. They are, of course, more expensive but can be used for longer.

Most of Vacuum Sealer Bags can be boiled due to cooking or thawing and are microwave safe. Their ability to be dishwasher safe makes them helpful in everyday duties in the kitchen. At the end, addition to all this useful properties is that they are transparent which means that you can easily identify what is stored in the bag. It can be irritating when you need something from the freezer and you cannot recognize it.

French Food

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

French food is considered the world’s premiere cuisine. Which is something that has always kind of boggled my mind.

The reason isn’t because I don’t like french food – as a matter of fact, I happen to love it. Whether it’s fisherman’s soup, or escargots, or moulle frittes (mussels and fries), french food is among my favorite cuisines. A local bistro in my neighborhood, Le Barricou, is one of my favorite restaurants. So it’s not like I don’t love french food.

The issue is that the quality of one cuisine versus another has always seemed like a totaly objective thing to me. Who is there to say that a french steak is better than a german style steak if you like the german style better? Who is there to say that one cuisine is more distinctive or complex than another, when the reality is that nearly every cuisine (with the exception of Great Britain and Ireland, which are unanimously considered culinary wastelands) has its own complexities and distinctive traits?

The reality is that no one has the right to say that one way or the other. Good French food is really good. So is good italian food, so is good thai food, so is good Mexican food. None is inherently better than the next. It’s all a matter of personal preference and tastes.

So as we’ve established, I really, really like French food. If I were to make a list of my favorite restaurants, Le Barricou would be at or near the top. Put a gun to my head and I’d say it’s my second favorite, but ranking so many restaurants that I love like that feels like a betrayal. So that said, I’d say there’s a “top flight” of best restaurants, and Le Barricou is in there.

The others would be a local pizza place called Motorino, which the New York Times recently called the best pizza in New York City (and, therefore, the best pizza in the United States of America). I’d also add La Piazzetta, another local Italian restaurant – this one specializing in pastas and fresh fish instead of pizza. I’d also include Fette Sau, a barbeque joint that does a Texas-style BBQ with a brooklyn twist. They use cuts of meat like flank steak and pulled pork that you just wouldn’t find in Texas.

There are others of course – the danger of a list like this is you inevitably forget one or two restaurants that you love.
