Don’t you just love casserole recipes

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

There are not many dishes that compare to classic casserole recipes when it comes to comfort food. Casserole Recipes come in many different forms. Most of these favorites have been around for a very long time and people associate the casserole with memorable family get-togethers.

The Joys of Learning To Cook

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

I felt that I couldn’t cook to save my life until very recently. You see, my mother never taught me how to cook, and my father didn’t either. In my family, neither of my parents were very dedicated chefs. Don’t get me wrong, they each had a few things that they could do well. Unfortunately, they each also have a lot of things that they couldn’t do all that well. My dad knew how to cook pork and my mom knew how to cook beef – it was that kind of situation. Together, they were almost like one good cook – almost. Still, they should have showed me something. I wouldn’t have spent all those years eating so unhealthily if they had.

Learning to cook is actually as simple as trying out a few recipes. It might be true that there are some people out there who can never learn how to paint, how to write neatly, how to play music, or a variety of other skills. Still, everyone can learn how to cook – at least at a basic level. It is true that there will never be a world where everyone is an amazing chef, but I think that everyone can learn how to prepare a few simple but delicious foods.

If you want to know how to cook, I highly recommend that look for learning to cook videos or buying The Joy of Cooking and a smaller recipe book. The Joy of Cooking will tell you everything about how to make food. It has thousands upon thousands of recipes, as well as basic instructions for things like how to cook rice, how to boil an egg, how to prepare fish, etc. The smaller recipe book will come in handy as well. You see, The Joy of Cooking is rather large and intimidating. A smaller recipe book, especially one chock-full of pretty pictures of the food, will help you actually get started while you are still too scared to open up that Joy of Cooking.

If you are still not motivated to learn about how to cook, think about what it can do for your social life. Once you learn a few good cooking recipes, you can have your friends over to eat a delicious meal. You can impress members of the opposite sex, eat delicious food for fairly cheap, and lose weight and stay healthy by eating out less frequently. Not knowing how to cook is like not knowing how to tie your shoes – it is something that should embarrass you past a certain age.

Investing in a Wine Refrigerator

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Doctors have been advising people to have a glass of red wine every now and again to promote heart health. It’s a trend that is catching on as more people are doing everything they can to stay healthy longer. Trading whiskey or beer for a glass of wine makes sense and having a few bottles to choose from is a great idea. Keeping the wine cold may seem to be as easy as putting it in your fridge but actually if you are a regular connoisseur of red wine investing in a small wine refrigerator is a much better choice.

If your experience with drinking wine is limited to choosing fine wines you may not realize that different wines taste best at different temperatures. It’s a very common and easily made mistake to put every bottle of wine purchased in the regular kitchen fridge. This can drastically alter the taste of the wine which may result in the loss of a great deal of its flavor. Using a wine refrigerator for selected wines can not only enhance their taste but it will improve it as well.

The deepest red varieties are best served at a moderately cool temperature. Because a standard fridge is designed to keep perishable items cold, its normal running temperature is much colder than the optimum needed to enhance the flavor of wine. A wine refrigerator can be set at a temperature that is ideal for this beverage. If you prefer the sparkling bubbles found in champagne you can adjust the temperature on the wine refrigerator to be warmer when you are storing it.

Most models are fairly compact and are designed to be put in a small space. Although many people store their wine refrigerator in a cellar, you can actually find some that are made for fitting within a kitchen. A popular design that is being built into many new homes is a small silver one that fits right under the kitchen cabinet. This allows for the convenience of easy storage and adds a nice designer touch to the look of the room.

Many people are concerned with adding an electrical appliance to their home that needs to be run at all times. Naturally a wine refrigerator does require energy but it’s not substantial enough to impact your energy costs by much. You can certainly purchase the smallest design which holds just six bottles of wine if that will meet your requirements. The larger twelve bottle wine refrigerator won’t use much more energy and it does allow for extra storage which is appealing.

Preparing a low carb breakfast

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Since young, I have a weight problem and I love to overeat. I love food, all kinds of food. I love cooking, grocery shopping, and serving food to guests. I know my weight is not healthy, but I love learning to cook healthy foods. I also like making foods that are high in calories.

My cooking skills and love of food began to create a weight problem for my husband also. He has never been overweight, but soon the amounts and kinds of food that I had in the house started to catch up with him. He told me that he needed to find a diet that would help him shed the extra fifteen pounds that he had gained. I agreed that I needed to try to lose weight again so we went on a low carbohydrates diet together.

I have tried every diet known to man, from weight watchers to pills, to prepared foods plan. I know that I need to make a life style change in addition to the dieting, because no matter how much I lose I put it back on. The hardest part of the new diet is finding a low carb breakfast. It is true that you can eat eggs, cheese and meats; however these things take time to prepare. I leave for work quite early in the morning so taking time to make a low carb breakfast was not something I wanted to do.

Many of the quick solutions for a morning meal did not fit the criteria for a low carb breakfast. Toast, cereals, yogurts and fruit which are quick to grab and eat on the run were not on the list of acceptable foods.

When we were on this diet there were not as many low carbohydrate foods available on the market as there are today. Most prepared and packaged low carb breakfast foods and other meals came out a year or two later, after the low carb diet became so popular. I find it interesting that once all of the prepackaged foods began to be available, people were not having as much success with the diet. The convenience of the prepackaged foods leads to a greater calorie intake.

My solution for the low carb breakfast was to boil a dozen eggs on Sundays. I would keep them in the refrigerator and eat two of them each morning. For a mid morning snack I would eat a couple of sticks of string cheese and then have a chef salad or bun-less burger with a side salad for lunch. Dinner was always protein and greens. We did both lose weight on the diet and the nice part was that you do not feel hungry.

Smoking Cessation Therapy

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I admit that the stop smoking ads have work even though I am not a big fan of propaganda no matter how impressive the cause. A lot of people I know who used to smoke are trying to quit smoking to but the problem is that many attempts are unsuccessful. They tried quitting cold turkey, using the patch, and using smoking cessation therapy, but nothing has worked for them. Now I realize that whether you like to quit smoking or not the choice is still yours.

Before I really quit, I took at least three smoking cessation therapy courses. One of them involved smoking cessation hypnotherapy, and promised to be a miracle cure. The results of that course of smoking cessation therapy, however, were not so good. As a matter of fact, although initially it helped me to quit smoking, eventually I did quite the opposite.  In the long run, I was actually smoking more after the hypnotherapy session.

Good Food in Central Iowa

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

The Midwest is known for the good, home cooked food that the agricultural communities have been serving for years.  You will often hear the locals talk about the fact that a meal is a meat, potato and vegetable (yes, I know a potato is a vegetable but tell that to most people from the are and you will get a look telling you what a dope you are) along with dessert.  After all, the work of the farmer is hard and burns a lot of calories so they want this type of meal.  It’s tradition, it’s the way it’s supposed to be and by golly, that’s what you are going to get in Iowa.

Well, that being the case, you will want to visit some of the smaller towns in Central Iowa to get a sampling of home style cooking.  If you are visiting Pella, you will find wonderful breads at the bakery, you will find little out of the way restaurants all across the region that serve things like roast beef, mashed potatos and green beans or perhaps you want one of Iowa’s great pork tenderloins.  Whatever your taste is for home town cooking you will certainly find it in the cental Iowa area!

The GI Diet: Part of the War on Fat | Lower Cholesterol

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

You might have heard of the GI diet and wondered if it had anything to do with the nation’s military forces.  Actually, this meal plan is not connected with any branch of the armed services.  But it is definitely an important part of the war on fat.  By following the GI diet, you might be able to successfully fight the battle of the bulge.

To begin with, it is important to define our terms.  GI refers to glycemic index.  The GI measures just how quickly the body breaks apart food in order to develop glucose, which has been referred to as a major energy source for the body.  The GI was the brainchild of Dr. David Jenkins, a nutritional expert at the University of Toronto.

The bar is very relaxing and not packed with pool tables or harsh bar lighting like your typical neighborhood bad. What is a Fun Picky Eater Diet?

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

It is very hard to prepare a fine meal for someone who is a picky eater. Many times people try to prepare two different meals and this can become very hard after awhile along with becoming expensive. If you find yourself having this problem, then you are someone who needs a healthy picky eater diet plan to help out. The best thing to do is to plan meals with a lot of different items to choose from. This really is not as expensive as it may sound. You just put out a lot of small portions of food instead of large portion ones of only a few things. This will give your picky eater more to choose from.

Planning a healthy picky eater diet includes colorful fun foods that entice the person to eat. This method works great with kids along with letting them be a part of making the meal. This just helps to make mealtime more fun and exciting. Plus kids like to try foods that they had a hand in making so this encourages them to eat. Don’t allow snacking before meals. In some cases this is what causes a person to be a picky eater, they simply are not hungry. Choose foods for your healthy picky eater diet that is nutritional. It is essential that you get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals needed to stay healthy.

The more foods you have to choose from the easier this will be to accomplish. Planning a healthy picky eater diet should include dairy products like cheese, yogurts and milk. Other foods include a variety of meat, breads and cereals. Rice, eggs, pasta grains and nuts are also fine choices. When a picky eater is presented with a big variety of foods they will be temped to try different ones. This can help to broaden the choices when it comes to meal time and can encourage them to try new foods more often. This is one of the goals you are trying to achieve.

As long as the picky eater in your home is gaining the appropriate amount of weight and for the most part seems healthy, then don’t worry if they only seem to be eating small amounts of food at a time. If they are healthy and have energy, then most likely they are getting enough of the vitamins and minerals needed to stay healthy, especially if what they eat is nutritional. Never fuss at a picky eater and demand they eat something they don’t want, this will simply make things worse. In time, they will come around and start venturing out by trying new foods.
