Understanding The Intricacies Of Organic Farming

Friday, June 30th, 2006

I had been eating food grown by organic farming for some time, but never really understood the intricacies of it. I guess that I still don’t in some ways. You see, the type of organic farming that I was doing, growing small plots of my own stuff, was much different from the agriculture that goes on at the big organic farms scattered across the country. They have to find ways to grow huge fields of the same crop, and they can afford expensive measures to control pests without using any unnatural pesticides. For me, I had very little space to meet all of my needs, and I had to be clever to defeat the little varmints which were the bane of organic farming.

Bottled Drinking Water Blues

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

I drank tap water at hundreds of different homes throughout Northern California. In my own homes, I took it straight from the tap, cooked with it, brushed my teeth with it and showered in it, and made Jello and ice cubes with it. And nothing ever happened. There is a slew of discussions about contaminants in tap water. Okay, so high levels of bacteria are found in a select city, bacteria that slips through the elaborate filtering systems and impacts—in one case, for example—400,000 residents. But there is also the bottled drinking water company that is found to have just bottled tap water after filtering it and then calling it fresh-from-the-mountaintop bottled drinking water.

The George Foreman grill has quickly become nearly as indispensable to the American family as the microwave and blender.  Despite that, I was quite wary of it in the beginning.

A Review of Bottled Drinking Water

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

An article about Bottled Drinking Water

The cost of bottled drinking water is often the deterrent for purchasing it. Although everyone does pay to use the water in their own homes, drop by drop, there is no question that bottled drinking water is usually quite a bit more expensive. However, if you are strictly using the water in bottles for drinking, the cost is really negligible. Tap water use while you’re cooking is usually okay because of the high temperatures act as a natural cleaner and purification act.

The Convenience of Bottled Water Service

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

An article about Bottled Water Service

I usually don’t pay much attention to the results of medical studies that proclaim something or other is bad for my health. It seems that they contradict themselves on a regular basis.  Yes, I already know I should lay off the double cheeseburgers and extra large french fries for lunch. I may not need it but I’m going to have it anyway.  I really don’t need anyone preaching to me.  I don’t think anyone likes that.  But I have to admit that there are some warnings that I do heed, and that includes anything that has to do with drinking water. As soon as I discovered how many toxins and added chemicals are contained in the water that comes out of our spigots, I promised myself I would check out a bottled water service.

The Secrets of Cake Design

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Professions come in all shapes and sizes, and one of the most creative is that of a cake designer.  When visiting the local bakery with its magnificent cake designs, I thought some talented soul at the bakery was responsible.  But a friend of mine told me I was wrong — there are specialists who do nothing but design cakes.  My friend, who has taken some classes in baking, told me that cake design has been one of the most sought after courses in food design. Well, I am not sure that I have the skill to become a professional cake designer, but I have found some tools to help me with a cake design that matches the special occasion that I am baking for.

For example, I have found cake molds shaped like Christmas trees for the holidays, wildflower designs for my teenager daughter’s birthday, and other shapes that make for a quick and simple design that’s easy to decorate with frosting and get me enough “oohs and ahhs” from my family to boost my ego a bit.
